reciProfity links to the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference (Release 28, released September 2015, slightly revised May 2016)
Associate any of your ingredients with a USDA nutrient code and we will use that code to follow USDA 2017 guidelines for restaurant menus.
USDA nutrient codes help reciProfity deliver accurate, standardized nutritional data for ingredients. By linking to the USDA database, reciProfity can automatically populate nutrient codes and conversion values where available. For ingredients not found in the USDA database, users can create custom nutrient codes to ensure complete nutritional tracking.
Assigning nutrient codes is important for several reasons:
- Standardization: USDA nutrient codes provide a standardized method for classifying and tracking the nutritional content of foods. This ensures consistency and accuracy in nutritional data.
- Comprehensive Data: Leverages the USDA’s extensive database to provide accurate, up-to-date nutritional information.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports labeling and reporting requirements with government-backed data.
- User Trust: Reinforces confidence in the accuracy and reliability of nutritional values.
- Flexibility: Allows users to define custom nutrient codes for proprietary or non-standard ingredients.
Using USDA Codes
On the Edit Ingredient page, begin typing in the Nutrient Codes field. The search is flexible—whether you type “butter light,” “light butter,” or “stick butter,” it will return all relevant matches. Simply select the option that best fits your ingredient.
If a USDA nutrient code includes conversion data, reciProfity will display it in the Conversions section with a yellow bar labeled “USDA.”
If conversion data is available from the Book of Yields, it will appear with a blue bar. You can also add manual conversions, which will appear without a color bar.
Custom Nutrient Codes
If the ingredient isn’t listed in the USDA or Book of Yields databases, you can create a Custom Nutrient Code to ensure complete nutritional tracking.
