To ensure accurate nutrition labels, every ingredient in a recipe must have a nutritional profile. If an ingredient isn’t listed in the USDA database, you can create a custom nutrition code in reciProfity. All nutrition data must be entered using 100-gram portions, which is the USDA standard for consistency and comparison.
How To Add Custom Nutrition Information
Step 1: From the hamburger menu or Dashboard, select The Optimizer.
Step 2: Select Custom Nutrition.
Step 3: Then click the green +Add Nutrition button to add a new item. Enter the ingredient name and its nutrition data. reciProfity will generate a code for this entry.
Step 4: Source the Nutritional Information
- If the ingredient is listed in the USDA Branded Foods database, copy the nutrient values directly—they’re already in 100-gram portions.
- If not, use the product’s packaging label and convert the values to 100 grams.
Step 5: Use basic math to scale the label’s serving size to 100 grams. Start by identifying the serving size in grams from the product’s packaging. Then, for each nutrient:
- Divide the nutrient value by the serving size to get the amount per gram.
- Multiply the result by 100 to get the value per 100 grams.
Example: Crispbread (33g serving size)
- Calories:
10 / 33 * 100 = 30 calories - Sodium:
250 mg / 33 * 100 = 757 mg - Carbohydrates:
2 g / 33 * 100 = 6.06 g
Repeat this process for each nutrient listed on the label. Once converted, enter the 100-gram values into the Custom Nutrition fields in reciProfity.
To confirm accuracy, you can create a test recipe using only the ingredient. The nutrition output should match your converted values.
Step 6: Verify With a Test Recipe
Create a simple recipe using only the ingredient you just added. The nutrition output should match your converted values—this confirms the setup is correct.
Step 7: Assign the Custom Nutrition Code to the Ingredient
Open the ingredient in edit mode. In the left sidebar, find the Nutrient Codes field and start typing the name of your custom code (e.g., “crispbread”).
Custom codes show a green icon; USDA codes show an orange icon.
