Catchweight is the practice of managing products that vary in weight, like meats, produce, or cheese, even when they’re purchased in standard units such as cases or bushels. It allows you to track both the average and actual weight of these items, which helps ensure accurate inventory, cost control, and billing.
For example, if you order a case of frozen turkeys, each case might weigh slightly differently. With catchweight tracking, you're billed based on the exact weight received, not just an estimate. This improves transparency and ensures you're paying (and charging) the right amount every time.

How To Enter Catchweight Items in reciProfity
When entering invoices for catchweight items, make sure to enter the total weight invoiced, not just the number of cases received. reciProfity will use that weight to update both pricing and on-hand inventory values accurately.
Catchweight management isn’t fully automated—it requires manual oversight during receiving.
Setting Up Packaging
If you're uploading an order guide and the vendor uses catchweight, reciProfity will import the packaging details correctly. The Packaging section will reflect the catchweight setup, as shown in this image:
If you're entering packaging manually, use the Template feature to simplify the process:
- Click the dropdown arrow next to Template.
- Start typing catchweight.
-
Select the appropriate type (lb or kg), and reciProfity will auto-fill the fields as shown in the image below:
Note that you’ll still need to enter the price per pound or kilogram manually.
Using Average Weight and Cost (Optional)
If you're comfortable with small inventory discrepancies balancing out over time, you can use average pricing:
- Set the Pack Size to the average weight (in the example below, 15 lbs).
- Enter the case price as the “As Purchased Price.”
This method simplifies data entry but may reduce precision.
Invoice Import Tip
When importing invoices, reciProfity uses a catchweight trigger to calculate pricing. It pulls the actual weight and the total cost from the invoice and treats that as the case cost. This ensures accurate pricing for variable-weight items.
