Why it's important
Catchweight refers to the practice of managing products that have variable weights. Items such as meats, produce, and cheese can vary in weight even if purchased in standard units like cases or bushels. Catchweight management allows vendors to track both the average weight and the actual weight of these products, ensuring accurate inventory tracking, cost management, and billing.
For example, if a vendor sells a case of frozen turkeys, the actual weight of each case can differ. Catchweight management ensures that the customer is billed based on the exact weight of the case they receive rather than an estimated average. This approach helps maintain transparency and accuracy in transactions.
How to use it
When you enter your invoices, key in the total weight invoiced, not the total number of cases received. reciProfity will update the pricing and the on-hand values appropriately.
There is no easy solution to Catchweight management, it requires manual oversight when receiving.
1) If you are uploading an order guide and the vendor uses catchweight reciProfity will import it correctly and the Packaging section should look like this:
2) If you are entering Packaging information manually, use our Template to fill in the fields:
Click on the dropdown arrow next to Template
Begin typing in catchweight
Choose the type of Catchweight (lb or kg), and we'll fill in the fields for you.
The filled-in fields will look like this: You must fill in the price per pound or kilogram.
Average weight and cost
If you're comfortable with inventory discrepancies and cost balancing out over time, you can use average pricing by entering the case quantity and cost. For instance, if the average case weighs 15 lbs, set the "Pack Size" to 15 lbs, and the "As Purchased Price" will be the case price.
There is a catchweight trigger in invoice imports that says, ‘Import the small unit quantity and price extension; that’s the case cost.’
