reciProfity uses two distinct terms—Ingredients and Products—to manage recipe data and purchasing details.
- An ingredient is a component used in a recipe. For example, flour is an ingredient in chocolate chip cookies.
- A product is a specific item purchased from a vendor. Products vary by package size. For instance, unbleached flour may be available in 1 lb, 5 lb, 25 lb, or 50 lb bags. All of these are products tied to the same ingredient.
From a recipe’s perspective, the ingredient stays the same regardless of packaging. What changes is the product’s size and price. A 50 lb bag typically costs less per pound than a 1 lb bag, which lowers the cost per cookie. reciProfity factors in those product details to determine recipe costs and margins.
How reciProfity handles ingredients and products
When you upload an Order Guide, reciProfity creates a unique product for each ingredient. If you upload multiple vendor catalogs, you might see duplicate ingredients. For example, if Vendor A sells a case of 24 jars of applesauce and Vendor B sells a case of 12, both entries will appear as separate ingredients—even though they refer to the same item.
To clean this up, you can use the Ingredient Merge feature to combine duplicates into a single ingredient while keeping both products attached.
Let’s look at an example. For the item “Applesauce, Fancy,” which is depicted in the figure below, there are two products: one from Sysco and one from Ben E. Keith. Both are the same type of applesauce, but they’re packed differently. reciProfity keeps both products linked to the same ingredient and displays their individual prices, so you can compare costs and manage purchasing more effectively.
