When you buy a whole item—like a loaf of bread, a pie, or a tray of brownies—but sell it by the slice or piece, you need a conversion to make sure your pricing is accurate.
reciProfity supports two types of conversions:
- Ingredient conversions: Used when the purchase unit (like a loaf or case) differs from how it’s used in a recipe (like a slice or ounce).
- Prep recipe conversions: Used when you make a batch (like a tray of blondies) and need to break it down into sellable portions (like individual blondies).
In both cases, you’re converting a larger unit into smaller, usable parts. This ensures the original cost of the item carries through to each portion you sell—whether it’s a slice of pie, a piece of fruit, or a single brownie.
How to Use Conversions for Sliced Items
Prep Recipe Conversion Example: Blondies
Let’s say you bake a tray of blondies and cut it into 50 individual pieces. To make sure each blondie is priced correctly, you’ll use a prep recipe conversion.
Here’s how to set it up:
- Yield / Portion: Enter 1 tray
- Conversion: Enter 50 each per 1 tray (since you sell them by the piece)
- Then, create a serving recipe for blondies using 1 each as the unit
If you pre-bag them, you can also include packaging details, like how many blondies go in a bag, plus the cost of the bag, label, and tie.
Ingredient Conversion Example: Bread by the Slice
Now let’s look at an ingredient conversion using a loaf of bread. You buy 15.5 oz loaves of French bread, but you want to price it by the slice in your recipes.
Here’s what to do:
- In the Pack Size field, enter either 1 loaf or 15.5 oz. Just make sure it matches how you enter it in the conversion section.
- As pictured here, Pack Size is 1 loaf:
which matches 1 loaf in the Conversion "Per" field: - And as pictured here, Pack Size is 15.5 oz:

- In the Conversion section, enter how many slices you get per loaf (e.g., 15 slices per 1 loaf) in the There Are field.
Once this is set, you can use and price 1 slice as an ingredient in any recipe.
This same setup works for other whole items, like a pineapple sliced for drinks. Just enter the number of slices per fruit, and reciProfity will handle the rest.
